I like your comment, “The focus is on humanityâ€™s arrogance and potential for survival. I hope thereâ€™s more to environmentalism than that.”
Constantly claiming that our survival is at stake causes people to tune out. I think that with technology we can support a much larger population. To me the question is, do we want to all live in small apartments in crowded cities? I see that as the bigger risk, a reduction in our quality of life.

since i am now a left-wing revolutionary, according to the commentors at env-econ, let me provide a link a blog that provides a contrasting approach to the environment and economics, where the latter does not overshadow the former. this post compares the two disciplines. warning, the post is very jargony.
